“We will stand by you.” – message sent from the fleet tug USS Pawnee to the crippled and sinking cruiser USS Houston, October 16, 1944

The Houston had been torpedoed by Japanese aircraft, and was in imminent danger of sinking. The Pawnee had her in tow, and had the Houston suddenly rolled over and gone down, the tug would likely have followed. It takes time to cut a towline.

When the captain of the Houston assessed the situation, and suggested that Pawnee cast off, the answer was immediate.

We will stand by you.

This is what marriage is all about, too. You sail together…or you go down together. Only with that kind of trust can you truly give your heart to another.

Not for nothing is marriage a sacramental shadow of our relationship with the Almighty.
